Teaching Experience
In all of my teaching assignments, I was responsible for the creation of the syllabus (or essential parts of it) and the planning and execution of the lessons, assignments, and assessments. Most of my positions involved extracurricular activities that I will describe further below. Here, I list only selected teaching assignments. For a complete list of my teaching positions, please see my CV.
Seoul, 2008-2010
Berlin, 2010-2012
State College, PA, Penn State, 2012-2018
Atlanta, GA, Georgia Tech, since 2018
- In 2008, I fulfilled a DAAD Teaching Assistantship at Yonsei University Seoul. This was also the location of the DAAD Information Center (DAAD IC), and I had the pleasure of participating in the DAAD IC's various networking and outreach events. At Yonsei University, I taught elementary to advanced German courses. Additionally, I organized German movie nights, German conversation hours (Stammtisch), excursions to exhibitions, and culture days at which, for example, I introduced the German-style breakfast and Christmas traditions.
- From 2009 to 2010, I taught elementary to advanced German courses at the Goethe Institut Seoul (A1 to C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference, CEFR). The obligatory teacher training workshops and examiner certification taught me fundamental teaching principles and skills. Through these experiences, not only did my teaching repertoire grow considerably, but I also grew in my ability to creatively design class activities to deliver the content.
Berlin, 2010-2012
- In the summers of 2010 to 2012, I taught advanced-level courses (B1 and B2 of the CEFR) at the Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS). The challenge and, at the same time, the exciting beauty of these courses was that they were culturally heterogeneous classes. Suddenly, discussing something as "trivial" as breakfast led to intense cultural exchange! These intensive language courses also incorporated excursions to places in Berlin that integrated the topics of the course and allowed for in-depth cultural experiences. I used these excursions to lead students into an encounter with history, art, gentrification, and the elegant way of remembrance in Berlin.
State College, PA, Penn State, 2012-2018
- Since 2012, I have been a Teaching Assistant at The Pennsylvania State University and have taught elementary to advanced German courses. Additionally, I co-organized the annual German Day event at Penn State, which promotes the study of German to about 400 high school students in the surrounding areas. I also participated in the weekly Kaffeestunde (coffee hour) and German movie nights to engage with students outside of the classroom.
- Another facet of my teaching experience at Penn State is my involvement with Bilingualism Matters @ Penn State. As part of the steering committee, I have participated in various outreach activities at local schools, day care centers, and events, promoting bilingual education by "translating" research on bilingualism into everyday situations in a bilingual society. I have especially enjoyed the opportunity to give talks about the advantages of bilingual education to parents and educators at Korean heritage language schools in Germany.
Atlanta, GA, Georgia Tech, since 2018
- Starting August 2018, I was a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Georgia Tech and was teaching Elementary German, Business German, and German Linguistics. Additionally, I was involved in the summer abroad program Language for Business and Technology (LBAT), teaching Business German with a focus on "Strukturwandel" in Düsseldorf.
- In August 2019, I joined the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Furman University as Assistant Professor of German and Linguistics. I am currently teaching elementary and intermediate German courses.
